Golden Visa Investment Funds is a residence obtained in exchange for investing in the country's economy. The investment should be a minimum of EURO 500,000 in investment fund units, with a holding period of at least 5 years.
Stay Requirement:
- 7 days per year while you are a resident
Investment Options:
- Minimum Investment: To qualify for the golden visa, you'll need to have invested €500,000 in funds.
- Fund Choices: A wide range of funds covering technology, agriculture, healthcare, renewable energy, and more.
- Eligible Funds: The fund needs to be approved and regulated by the CMVM (Portuguese Securities Market Commission), with at least 60% of the fund's capital invested in companies headquartered in Portugal.
- Diversification: As long as you meet the €500,000 requirement, you can invest in one fund or spread it across multiple funds for better diversification (though this may increase fees and paperwork).
Continued:
- ROI: Expected annual returns vary, with some funds offering up to 20% IRR and others around 6-7% IRR.
- Minimum Hold Period: Qualifying funds require a minimum 5-year holding period, held throughout the golden visa process until permanent residency or citizenship is obtained (in practice, around 7 years).
- Regulation: Golden visa investment funds are regulated by the Portuguese Securities Market Commission (CMVM), the Bank of Portugal, the external Fund Management company, and the Portuguese Tax Authorities.
Benefits of Portugal's Golden Visa:
- Visa-free travel within the Schengen Area
- Family reunification
- Access to Portugal's high-quality education and healthcare systems
- A pathway to Portuguese citizenship, after holding the residency for 5 years
- Tax benefits for non-habitual residents if you decide to live in Portugal

Frequently asked questions
Clear answers before you move forward.
01Does Bright Lisbon recommend a specific fund?+
The fund opportunities we present are managed by fund managers regulated by the Portuguese Securities Market Commission (CMVM) and are structured to meet the applicable requirements for the Portuguese Golden Visa route. We encourage clients to independently review each fund’s regulatory status, structure, fees and associated risks, with appropriate legal, financial and tax advice before making an investment.
02Can my family be included?+
Yes. Family members can be included, including your spouse, dependent children under 18, dependent unmarried children up to 25 who are studying, and dependent parents of the investor or spouse.
03Is the Golden Visa legislation fixed?+
Portuguese immigration and investment regulations can change. We monitor relevant developments and coordinate with qualified legal professionals so clients can receive current legal guidance before making important decisions.
04What happens after I make the investment?+
Our support does not end with the investment. We coordinate the next stages of the Golden Visa process, including documentation, professional liaison and application support, and can continue assisting with relevant relocation and settlement needs in Portugal.
